COPD

!: COPD

COPD or Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a disease that has no cure. The most common cause of COPD is smoking cigarettes. COPD can lead to lethal diseases such as Lung Cancer. It is very important that if you are a smoker that you watch for the early warning signs. When this disease is caught early your doctor can assist you in controlling it.

COPD is caused when the respiratory system is damaged. The body creates symptoms as it tries to compensate for the disease. Anyone who has been smoking for a long time is at high risk to develop COPD. The most obvious symptom of COPD is persistent coughing, also the chest begins to become barrel shaped.

Those who suffer with COPD often produce sputum when they cough. The sputum is often clear, white or yellowish in color. In severe cases the sputum may also contain small amounts of blood. COPD causes shortness of breath. Most sufferers do not notice this symptom until it very progressed. This is because people assume that their lack of breath is due to lack of exercise.

When breathing a person who suffers from COPD may hear a wheezing sound in their chest. This caused by the air passing through the lungs. This is because the airways have been partially blocked. Rapid weight loss is also a sign of COPD, because the lung has to expend more calories to do simple tasks.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma -- The Cancer Of Abdominal Lining

!: Peritoneal Mesothelioma -- The Cancer Of Abdominal Lining

One of the fatal types of mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma in which the cancerous cells attack the lining of the abdomen called Peritoneum. Peritoneum is the thin membrane, which shields various organs of the abdomen and also provides a lubricating fluid to enable the organs to move and work properly. Peritoneal Mesothelioma, which affects this lining, is yet now a relatively rare disease that accounts for about 1/5 of all mesotheliomas. Its only known cause in the U.S. till date is previous exposure to asbestos.

Major symptoms

Though Mesothelioma is neither age nor sex specific, peritoneal Mesothelioma is mostly seen in men who are in the age group of 50-70 years. There are a number of symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma most of which start appearing after 20, 30 or 50 years after the exposure to asbestos. These symptoms may include weight loss (however, waist line may increase), pain or swelling in the abdomen, weakness, loss of appetite, bowel obstruction, anemia, nausea and fever. Also, fluid often accumulates in the peritoneal space leading to a condition called Ascites.

Diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma

The initial step towards detection of peritoneal mesothelioma includes X-rays and CT scans. For confirmed diagnosis, however the doctor needs to do biopsy whereby a piece of tissue is cut from the affected part of the victim's body and is placed under microscope for examination. If the disease is detected at an early stage it stands better chance of getting cured than the state of diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma, where the cancer has already spread to various parts.

The cure

It's true that peritoneal mesothelioma is fatal and leads to several deaths every year. However, with continued researches, several modes of treatments have been embarked upon and in the future there is a fair chance of the disease becoming absolutely curable. The types of treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

In surgery a part of the abdominal tissue is cut out to remove the tumor. At times the doctor may also need to remove a lung or a portion of the diaphragm as per the requirement of the surgery. Radiation therapy, the second method, requires the application of high energy X-rays to shrink the tumor and kill the malignant cells. The rays may be applied from an external machine or by placing the radiation source directly to the affected part of the body, by means of plastic tubes. Last treatment type is the chemotherapy whereby a combination of drugs is applied to kill the cancer cells. The drugs may be administered by mouth in the capsule form or may be applied intravenously via needle.

However, it is essential to mention that cost of treating any form of cancer is extravagant and you may consult a mesothelioma lawyer to earn you a handsome compensation from the authority who was responsible for your prior exposure to asbestos.

So learn more about peritoneal mesothelioma so that you can initiate the treatment at the very early stage and get cured.

Lung Cancer Pathophysiology

!: Lung Cancer Pathophysiology

The pathophysiology of lung cancer development is complicated and incompletely understood. The genes influenced in the pathogenesis of the cancer generate proteins involved in cell development and differentiation, apoptosis, tumor progression, cell cycle processes, angiogenesis, and immune regulation. Exposing these mechanisms ought to translate into novel means of risk stratification, early detection, prevention, and therapy.

The cancers are in general divided into small cell (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Small cell lung cancer responds to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and for that reason the treatment is extremely different from the other types. Malignant tumors arise most generally in response to repetitive carcinogenic stimuli, inflammation, or irritation. The mucosal lining is the most susceptible to injury, particularly at locations of bronchial bifurcation. The slow alteration of normal mucosal cells into malignant cells is a complex course.

Non-small cell lung cancer accounts for about 85% of all cancers of lung. It is divided further into squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma histologies. All of them share identical treatment methods and prognoses but have different histologic and clinical characteristics.

Cigarette smoking is accounts for about 30% of all cancer deaths. Particularly for case of cancer of lung, smoking is high risk to expand the disease. It is about 85% of the cases of cancer of lung in men and 75% in women caused by smoking. There are approximately 38 million former cigarette smokers and roughly 50 million smokers in the United States nowadays.

To explain about how mechanisms pathophysiology of cancers of lung course occurred, perhaps it will be more than one book.

Acid Reflux Esophagus Complications You Should Know About

If you have acid reflux, you may think of it as just an inconvenience, admittedly a pretty painful one at times, but some people see it as simply a condition they can live with as long as they have something to soothe away the pain when it strikes. While this condition is not as immediately serious as a stroke or heart attack for example, however, if left untreated, there can be serious acid reflux esophagus complications.

When suffering with this condition, it's important to realize that it isn't just an inconvenience, but can lead to serious health complications. You need to know what you are up against and what you can do to avoid experiencing any complications in the future. There are some simple steps you can take that can save you a lot of pain and help avoid future health risks.

Adenocarcinoma Lung Cancer

A common esophagus complication that acid reflux sufferers experience is the erosion of the esophagus that can take place when acid is left uncontrolled. The good news is that the esophageal tissue, while easily damaged, can heal when acid reflux is controlled either with the aid of medication or through lifestyle changes.

One option if you suffer from esophageal erosion is to take an over the counter or prescription proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to control the amount of stomach acid your body produces. The PPI's work to reduce the production of stomach acid, meaning that the risk of reflux is reduced. PPI's are usually only prescribed for short periods to enable healing but don't address the underlying cause of why the reflux was occurring in the first place. To tackle this, lifestyle changes are often required. If reflux is left unchecked and erosion continues, scarring can be the result, with associated problems in your sinuses, throat, and lungs.

For some people with chronic Cases of acid reflux difficulty may arise with swallowing foods. This problem can be as a result of scar tissue forming in the esophagus due to the long-term presence of acid.

In time, and if left untreated, acid reflux can cause the esophagus to form what are known as peptic strictures. These can block some of the esophagus and lead to problems with swallowing just about any food or even liquids, depending on the location and size of the stricture.

Probably the most problematic acid reflux related esophagus complication is a condition known as Barrett's esophagus. Barrett's esophagus can develop when acid reflux is chronic and has been left untreated (though it can also happen in some Cases when treatments have been administered), and the effected tissues begin to change within the esophagus.

Due to prolonged exposure to acid, the tissues can change in form similar to those that you would find lining the intestines. Those with this condition (it is most prevalent in white males) have a 125% higher chance of getting what is considered a very rare form of cancer in the esophagus. This is called Esophageal Adenocarcinoma.

These acid reflux esophagus complications can be very serious in nature, and are a good reason to take your acid reflux symptoms very seriously. The odd acid reflux episode is pretty normal and probably isn't going to cause any lingering problems, but chronic acid reflux, heartburn or GERD that is largely ignored can lead to serious health problems. Discuss medication options with your doctor and consider adopting diet modifications, and even how to better position your body at night so you can minimize the damaged acid can do to your esophagus. If possible, lose weight and stop smoking, if either of those are a problem for you. Sometimes the smallest changes can increase your odds for a healthier outcome by leaps and bounds.

What is Lung Cancer - Incidence, Signs, Symptoms, Causation, Prognosis and Treatment

INTRODUCTION

Lung cancer may also be the most tragic cancer because in most Cases, it might have been prevented, 87% of Cases are caused by smoking. Lung cancer has long been the most common cause of cancer death in men and since 1987 it has also become the most common cause of cancer death in women. It is the second most commonly occurring form of cancer in most western countries and although the lung cancer incidence is less common in developing countries, the rapid increase in the popularity of smoking will see the number of sufferers in those countries quickly catch up with the western world.

Adenocarcinoma Lung Cancer

Lung cancers can arise in any part of the lung, and 90%-95% of cancers of the lung are thought to arise from the epithelial, or lining cells of the larger and smaller airways (bronchi and bronchioles); for this reason, lung carcinomas are sometimes called bronchogenic carcinomas or bronchogenic cancers.

Retroviruses have been of great importance to biomedical science for the past half century. Initially, studies on oncogenic animal retroviruses provided important insights into molecular processes in carcinogenesis - most notably the existence and mechanisms of action of oncogenes and proto-oncogenes. Moreover, several human diseases are caused by retroviruses, including AIDS, adult T-cell leukemia and the neurological disease HAM/TSP. The topic of this volume is a relatively unknown animal retrovirus, jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus, the causative agent of transmissible lung cancer in sheep -- ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma. The disease was first documented in South Africa in the 1800s, it has a wide geographical distribution, and it is of economic importance in high endemic regions. However, until very recently the nature of the etiologic agent was unclear, and relatively few laboratories actively studied the disease.

The most common types are epidermoid carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.

Most experts agree that lung cancer is attributable to inhalation of carcinogenic pollutants by a susceptible host. Who is most susceptible? Any smoker over the age of 40, especially if they began smoking before the age of 15, have smoked 20 or more for 20 years, or worked with or near asbestos. Two other factors also increase susceptibility: exposure to carcinogenic industrial and air pollutants (asbestos, uranium, arsenic, nickel, iron oxides, chromium, radio active dust, and coal dust.) and familial susceptibility.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Because early lung cancer usually produces no symptoms, the disease is often in an advanced stage when first diagnosed. Late stage signs are: with epidermoid and small cell carcinoma; smokers cough, hoarseness, wheezing, dyspnea, hemoptysis and chest pain. With adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma; fever, weakness, weight loss, anorexia and shoulder pain. In addition, hormone production which regulates various body functions may also be affected.

DIAGNOSIS

Firm diagnosis requires chest x rays, sputum cytology, CT scanning, bronchoscopy the examination of pleural fluid and biopsies. Other tests to detect metastasis include bone scans, bone marrow biopsy and CT scans of the brain and abdomen.

METASTASES

The disease most often spreads to the liver, the adrenal glands, the bones, and the brain. Cancer that has metastasized to the bone causes bone pain, usually in the backbone (vertebrae), the thighbones, and the ribs. Cancer that spreads to the brain can cause difficulties with vision and weakness on one side of the body.

The cancer may grow into certain nerves in the neck, causing a droopy eyelid, small pupil, sunken eye, and reduced perspiration on one side of the face; together these symptoms are called Horner's syndrome (see Autonomic Nervous System Disorders: Horner's Syndrome). It may grow directly into the esophagus, or it may grow near it and put pressure on it, leading to difficulty in swallowing. It may also spread through the bloodstream to the liver, brain, adrenal glands, spinal cord, and bone.

TREATMENT

Treatment depends on the cancer's specific cell type, how far it has spread, and the patient's performance status. If investigations confirm lung cancer, CT scan and often positron emission tomography (PET) are used to determine whether the disease is localised and amenable to surgery or whether it has spread to the point where it cannot be cured surgically. Treatment is usually a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Surgery is usually the first option. Chemotherapy can be used as a first line treatment for or as additional treatment after surgery. Radiation therapy can be directed at your cancer from outside your body (external beam radiation) or it can be put inside needles, seeds or catheters and placed inside your body near the cancer (brachytherapy). Radiation therapy can be used alone or along with other lung cancer treatments. Radiation therapy can also be used to lessen side effects of lung cancer.

Treatment may not be as effective for patients with bone or liver metastases from lung cancer, excessive weight loss, ongoing cigarette use, or pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease or emphysema. At some point, if you and your oncologist or primary care physician agree that treatment no longer is advisable, hospice care can provide comfort.
